Dr. Joseph Mercola, who is an osteopathic physician and a New York Times bestselling author, believes that the leading cause of premature aging and death is increased insulin and leptin receptor resistance. Okay, that’s all well and good, but I am sure most of you are wondering what that all means.
Well, as you may have read, in previous Body Designs of course, if you eat too many carbohydrate, processed or high sugar foods (even fruit), you are susceptible to high levels of insulin. And that my friends is a recipe, or should I say menu, for fat gain (at best) or diabetes and death (at worst).
Wait! Go back! Yup, he said it.
No, actually Dr. Mercola said it. But I agree. Even too much fructose, the primary sugar found in fruit (more than 25 grams a day), especially if you don’t exercise enough, is unhealthy. That’s right! Fructose is now believed to be another major contributor to:
• Insulin resistance and obesity• Elevated blood pressure • Elevated triglycerides and cholesterol • Cardiovascular disease, liver disease, cancer, arthritis and even gout
How does this happen? In laymen terms, fructose bonds with proteins and creates inflammation, which activates your immune system in a defensive manner thus increasing the body’s stress levels which results in accelerated aging of the body. For example, inside your arteries, scar tissue is created and plaque is formed. This process underlies the strong connection between diabetes and heart disease.
Now, how much is 25 grams of fructose? Well, a 12 ounce glass of orange juice has 14 grams; while an orange itself only has five. So while it is practically impossible to eat your way there, it doesn’t take much to drink yourself over the limit – so to speak. Therefore, as Body Designs 21 and 54 explain, it’s better to peel and eat then pour and drink.
Furthermore, if the effects are severe enough, the brain’s Leptin receptors become paralyzed. And when they are not functioning correctly, the brain can’t tell the rest of the body that it is full. This is an obvious problem that could eventually lead to obesity.
Therefore, according to Dr. Mercola, controlling these two factors will likely eliminate more than 90 percent of the following:
• High blood pressure• Obesity• Diabetes• High cholesterol
What to do. What to do.
