Now that many of you are planning your summer vacation(s), I want to make sure you don’t overlook one of the most important part of your travel itinerary…your meals.
With people’s final destination ranging from the side of a pool to the other side of the world, I think it would be best to speak in generalities.
First and foremost, remember to stay hydrated; especially if you find yourself in a hot climate, being extremely active physically or consuming a lot of caffeine or alcohol.
Next, it is vital that you eat every three to four hours. And yes, that includes the hours you’re spending actually traveling (i.e. in a car, on a plane or in a terminal waiting for a connection).
Remember, eating regularly keeps your blood sugar levels normal and your metabolism high. It is times like these when it’s crucial to remember that you’re just eating to fuel your body. You don’t have to “treat” yourself in an airport. We all know there will be plenty of time for that.
Speaking of overindulgence during vacations, try to exercise a little restraint when dining out. If you know you’re going to be eating big dinners, eating less, but still often, is the best approach.
Instead of having full-blown meals at every chance, try packing lite snacks for your daily excursions. We all know the old adage, “When in Rome…,” but just don’t “do” as much as my ancestors did centuries ago.
Sure it is ok and fully expected that you enjoy the fare of where ever your plans take you.
However, your waistline as well as your wallet will thank you later if you don’t treat every meal as you last before heading to the vomitorium.
PS: Sorry for the poor title of this installment. I couldn’t think of a catchy one so 44 was Reggie Jackson’s number when he played for the NY Yankees. It is All-Star Weekend you know!!!
