Now that we are down to the last six installments of Body Designs, I want to address the same group of readers that got us started on this journey in the first place.
Who, you may ask, got this party started? Well, without naming names, and you know who you are, Body Designs was basically born out of the concern of one of my client’s, a mom, whose son (another client of mine) was heading off to the east coast for college and she wanted to make sure he had access to sound health and exercise “advise” while not being able to train on a regular basis. And, at the same time, to allow for my clients of all ages, who found themselves on the go, to be able to keep some semblance of a “program” together while away for business or vacation.
So high school seniors, and parents of all ages, this one is for you!
Leaving the nest carries with it certain responsibilities, risks and expectations. More often than not, fledgling “birds” manage to survive just fine without the protection of their parents – helicopter or not. However, in order to find their own identity, many do try different “things” when they finally leave the nest.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I know it’s a different age, in this New Millennium, and certainly a different “climate” here, in West LA, then when I was in school. So much so, that I know the “experimental” stage of such things as sex, drugs and alcohol happens much earlier now than it did almost two decades ago.
However, there are those “Late Bloomers” that don’t stray too much one way or another, until they are far out of their parents’ bird’s-eye view. And then, the “fun” begins. For many excessive drinking, hooking up, smoking and getting high are all a part of being socially accepted or “becoming of age”.
I know I don’t have to tell any of you the risks involved with any of the “activities” listed above. However, I do want to introduce you to a new phenomena that has “vaporized” onto the scene.
Vaping is what electronic cigarette users do as opposed to smoking. The term refers to the inhaling and exhaling of the nicotine vapor created from an e-cigarette when the base liquid, mixed with small amounts of nicotine and flavoring is created from a battery-powered atomizer (cigarette).
While there is much debate as to e-cigarettes’ overall safety, the resounding belief is that they are much safer than their deadly cousin cancer sticks. Even though tobacco-free, studies have shown that there is a decrease in lung function after their use. However, there is little evidence that “vaping” affects the heart.
Furthermore, the vapor may be inhaled second-handed. Thus, ibid.
And finally, on this date June 2, 575 AD Benedict I begins his reign as Catholic Pope. There have been 16 Pope Benedicts (including the one who resigned earlier this year).
FYI, AD stands for Anno Domini – Latin for ‘in the year of the Lord’
