Good Morning Body Designers!
Today’s topic comes from a personal trainer who has used this “food” to help shed fat en route to getting on stage for a fitness competition.
Obviously that’s not your goal! But, the benefits of Coconut Oil far exceed one’s desire to look great while posing!
Yes, first and foremost, I know, Coconut Oil is more than 90% saturated fat! But don’t freak out!! It is called the “low fat” fat. Its chemical properties make Coconut Oil actually act more like a carbohydrate in that it is quickly broken down in the liver and used as immediate energy. It boosts one’s energy and endurance like most carbohydrates. It is NOT stored like other fats. So it’s great for part of a pre-workout meal. Which fat is not!
Coconut Oil contains short and medium-chain fatty acids that are easily digestible and improves the absorption of fat soluble vitamins, minerals and amino acids (a necessity for building muscle). By removing stress on the pancreas, it increase the body’s metabolism and more energy is burned helping those who are overweight or obese take off excess body fat.
It also helps regulate the body’s use of blood glucose and improves insulin secretion and absorption (great for Type II Diabetes). In fact, many diabetics (Type I and Type II) use it to reduce their symptoms. Moreover, one’s risk of developing diabetes actually decreases with its regular use.
Also, because it contains about 50% lauric acid, it helps in preventing high cholesterol and high blood pressure. This acid, which the body converts into monolaurin, strengthens the immune system and fights infections. In fact, when applied on external infections, it forms a chemical layer which protects the body from dust, fungi, bacteria and other viruses. It is most effective on bruises; as it speeds up the healing process by actually repairing damaged tissue.
So, if all of the this sounds good, why not at 3-4 tablespoons (120 calories per) a day to your daily diet. It is recommended that you start in moderation and have one tablespoon with each daily meal. You can even replace the current “cooking” fats you use with it! So instead of using olive or vegetable oil, crack open a coconut and dig for oil! Or you can just by it in the supermarket. Oh yeah, for you popcorn lovers (and you know who you are…and so do I), drizzle some on top and enjoy!
