Ashwagandha is the newest “super food” to become popular on the health and fitness scene.
Classified as an “adaptogen,” this Indian herb is proven to help the body manage stress. And by its definition, “smell of the horse,” it has a strong smell and is able to increase one’s strength.
Some of its benefits include:
Reduced Blood Sugar Levels
Studies have shown that, due to its effects on insulin secretion and sensitivity, Ashwagandha can reduce blood sugar levels in both those who suffer from diabetes as well as those who don’t. This means that for all populations, Ashwagandha is effective in controlling hunger, energy levels and metabolism.
Has Anti-Cancer Properties
In laboratory studies, Ashwagandha induced apoptosis (the programmed death of cancer cells). That, coupled with the theory that it generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), which destroy cancer cells, gives scientists hope that it is a gateway to cancer cures.
Reduced Cortisol Levels
Known as the “stress hormone,” cortisol increases when blood sugar levels drop too low. That can lead to an increase in blood sugar levels. Which will lead to an increase in abdominal fat. In one study, participants that took the highest does of Ashwagandha, saw a 30% decrease in cortisol levels.
Reduced Anxiety and Insomnia
Try a “spot” of Moon Milk” which will help take the day’s edge of and glide you into a deep sleep.
Ingredients: 1 cup of milk, 1/2 tsp. ground Ashwagandha powder, 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. ground ginger, a pinch of ground nutmeg, i tsp. coconut oil, 1 tsp. honey or maple syrup
Directions: Bring milk to a low simmer (don’t boil), whisk in the Ashwagandha, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg (gently simmer for 5 minutes), stir in the coconut oil, and pour the Moon Milk into a cup sweetened with honey or maple syrup.
Boosts Testosterone in Men
Studies of men supplementing with Ashwaganda not only reported a significant increase in testosterone levels, but the quality of the sperm was better as well! Many men’s partners had reported becoming pregnant after just a three month treatment. And, where there is an increase in testosterone, there is an increase in muscle mass. Participants’ body composition and strength also increased thanks to the supplementation of Ashwaganda.
The talk of many of my clients is that they suffer from “inflammation”. Of course, what “super food” isn’t part of a anti-inflammation diet.
Lowers Cholesterol and Triglycerides
Increases Brain Function
As Ashwagandha promotes antioxidant activity that protects nerve cells from harmful free radicals, brain and memory function can increase.
A WORD OF CAUTION:
For the most part, Ashwagandha is safe to consume. However, please note that it may interact negatively with one’s thyroid, blood pressure and sugar medications. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, also, people with autoimmune disorders, may need to avoid Ashwagandha.
